Ardhanarishwara – union of Shiva and Shakti – a symbolic bipolarity of human mind.
Ardhanarishwara is a unified form of the dual nature of the masculine and feminine energy of the cosmos. It is represented by the combined form of Hindu god Shiva and his consort Shakti. It shows that the true god is non-dual, and the duality exists only in our physical world/existence. Ardhanarishwara also depicts the male energy of the universe – Purusha – and the female energy of the universe – Prakriti, the union of which starts the process of creation. Thus Ardhanarishwara is a symbol of creation. Shiva and Parvita had shown their Ardhanarishwara form to various Gods like Vishnu and Brahma. The male side also shows the masculine solar energy and the female side feminine lunar energy. When the mind reaches an awakened state, the duality ends.
