Chinese master Tung-Shan is a Chan Buddhist monk of 9th century.
Tung-Shan founded Caodong school in China, which later extended to Japan. Caodong school is a chan Buddhist sect and one of the five houses of Chan in China. He was born during Tang dynasty in Kuaiji, present day Zhejiang. At the age of ten, he was sent to study in a monastery under Lingmo. He spent a major portion of his life wandering between different Chan master and hermits in Hongzhou region. Most of his accounts are recorded in the form of philosophical dialogues and questions between him and his teachers.
