Dakshinimurti Shiva – the supreme teacher – Adi Guru.
Dakshinimurty is an aspect of Hindu God Shiva, the god of destruction. He is considered as the teacher of all kinds of knowledge. He is an aspect of the supreme consciousness, the ultimate reality – Brahman. Shiva in this form is a guru of Yoga, wisdom, and shastras. Scriptures say that if anyone doesn’t have a guru or teacher, he can worship Dakshinimurti Shiva as his teacher. Dakshna means South direction. He sits under tree, faces south and imparts the knowledge. Dakshinimurti is depicted as four-armed, holding, damru (two-headed drum), rosary, vedas, seated on deer sking. Under his right leg is a demon – apasmara – which represents ignorance. He is surrounded by sages who are receiving the Gyan or knowledge from Adi Guru.
