Dhanvantari – The Physician of the Gods.
Dhanvantari is the physician of the gods and the god of Ayurveda – an ancient Hindu system of medicine. When Devas and Asuras churn Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk), Dhanvantari emerges out of the ocean holding a pot of Amrit – the elixir of life. The day on which he was born is celebrated as Dhanteras – which is two days before the festival of light Diwali. On this day, it is considered auspicious day to make new purchases, especially gold or silver articles. Dhanvantari is depicted as a four-armed god holding Amrit pot, Vedas, Medicine, and leech (used for blood purification therapy). He is worshipped for sound health.
