Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami (1927 – 2001) was a Hindu spiritual leader and a Shaivaite – a follower of Shaivism.
Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami was born in Oakland, California and adopted Shaivism at a young age. At a very young age, he traveled to India and Sri Lanka and followed Yoga under Siddha Yogi Jnanaguru Yogaswami of Sri Lanka. He founded a temple monastery complex in Kauai, Hawaii, US. He was the 162nd head of Nandinatha Sampraday’s Kailasa Parampara – a sect of Shaivism which places great emphasis on Yoga. He represented Hinduism at the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders at Oxford, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro. He had also received U Thant Peace Award at the United Nations in New York in 2000.
