Sculpture is an ancient craft in India.
Sculptures were mainly used as religious art, illustrating the idols of Gods and Goddesses. The sculptures were excavated from the sites of Indus valley civilization (modern day North-west India, Pakistan and Afghanistan). Pillars during the reign of Mauryan Empire and Ajanta and Ellora caves, Khajuraho Temple are perfect examples of the prevalent art of sculpture in India. Sculptures are mostly made up of clay and stone.
