Kalaratri – the seventh form of invincible Goddess Durga.
Kalaratri is a ferocious form of Goddess Shakti. Kalaratri means the death of Kala. She is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri – the nine divine nights dedicated to fierce Goddess Durga. Thus, she is an aspect of Goddess Durga. The legend of Goddess Kalaratri is related to the asura (demon) Raktabeej. Raktabeej had a power that he would multiply himself with every drop of his blood dropping on the ground. This troubled the Gods as the more they try to kill Raktabeej, the more the demon multiplied himself. Goddess Kalaratri then emanated from Goddess Durga and expanded her tongue and didn’t allow any drop of blood of Raktabeej to fall on the ground. Thus the demon was killed by the miraculous efforts of Goddess Kalaratri. She is depicted in a fierce form, four-armed, carrying Khadag (scimitar) and Vajra (thunderbolt), and riding on her animal mount, a donkey.
