Kathia Baba is a name given to the saints who belong to Nimbarka clan and follow the Vaishnava doctrine of Dvaitadvaita – dualism-Non-dualism.
Sri Ram Das Kathia Baba, a saint of 19th century, used to wear Kath – a wooden belt – around his waist, and hence, became popular as Kathia Baba. After him, all the saints of Nimbarka clan started wearing wooden belts. There tradition is based on sacrifice, celibacy and dedication towards God. These saints worship Krishna – the eight incarnation of Vishu – and his shakti – Goddess Radha. They believe if one chants the name of God whole-heartedly, he will be free from materialistic bondages and attain self-realization.
