Left and Right brain hemisphere represented by Shiva and Shakti – a symbolic bipolarity of human mind.
Ardhanarishwara is a unified form of the dual nature of the masculine and feminine energy of the cosmos. It is represented by the combined form of Hindu god Shiva and his consort Shakti. It shows that the true god is non-dual, and the duality exists only in our physical world/existence. Ardhanarishwara also depicts the male energy of the universe – Purusha – and the female energy of the universe – Prakriti, the union of which starts the process of creation. Thus Ardhanarishwara is a symbol of creation. Human brain is also dual in nature – divided into left hemisphere and right hemisphere. The right brain is feminine – represented by Shakti. It governs recognition, intuition and creativity. The left brain is masculine – represented by Shiva. It is responsible for critical, analytical and rational thinking.
