Arghyam – offering water to the deity in temple.
Arghyam is a sanskrit word which means offering. It is a form of worship described in the vedas. In Hindu culture, water is offered to the deity, mainly Sun god Surya and Shiva Lingam. The importance of offeing water is mentioned in the Puranas in the form of a story in which demons called Mandeha are intending to destroy Surya. Thus, Arghyam or offering water to Surya acts as a weapon to destroy the demons.
