Devas appealing to God, Vishnu – High Quality Print of Artwork by Pieter Weltevrede
Description
-
Defeat of the Devas by the Asuras: The Devas (demi-gods), led by Indra, were defeated by the Asuras (demons) in battle. This led to a crisis in the heavens, and the Devas sought the help of Lord Vishnu to restore balance and overcome the forces of evil.
-
Appeal to Lord Vishnu: In their time of need, Indra (king of the Devas), along with Lord Brahma (the creator of the universe) and other Devas, appealed to Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe. Lord Vishnu is known to intervene whenever the cosmic order (Dharma) is disrupted.
-
Lord Vishnu’s Cosmic Form: Lord Vishnu is depicted sitting on the primordial serpent, Sheshnaag, floating on the ocean of milk (Ksheer Sagar). This cosmic scene symbolizes his eternal nature and control over the universe, as the ocean of milk represents the origin of all life.
-
Consort Goddess Lakshmi: Beside Lord Vishnu sits his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. Goddess Lakshmi is seen as the source of divine fortune and blessings, standing by Lord Vishnu during the pivotal moments of cosmic restoration.
-
Symbolism of Restoration: This image of Lord Vishnu with Goddess Lakshmi embodies the themes of divine protection and restoration. Lord Vishnu, as the preserver of the universe, ensures the balance of good over evil, while Goddess Lakshmi brings blessings of wealth and prosperity to the Devas and the world.
